A Letter for Memorial Day

Love Life Blog – May 27, 2026

Hello family and friends,

How are you? It’s been a couple of days since we’ve talked, so I thought now would be a good time to check in. I’d love to hear from you — drop me a comment, send an email, or shoot me a text. Your messages always mean so much.

Today is a day of remembrance, and as I sit here thinking about all those who have served and continue to serve, I wanted to honor them in a way that feels personal — not just in the details of what Memorial Day is, but in the heart of it.

I mentioned recently that I’ve found my writing rhythm again, especially through letters. And today felt like the perfect moment to write a letter to those who served and never came home.

Dear Soldier,

To the ones who served and never came home — this is for you, and for your families. Thank you for your service.

Today, the world moves a little slower. Flags lift in the breeze. Families gather. And somewhere, in living rooms and kitchens and quiet corners of this country, your name is spoken softly — sometimes aloud, sometimes only in the heart.

We remember you. Your families and loved ones remember you in ways the rest of us will never fully understand. For those of us who didn’t know you personally, we want you to know this: your service was not in vain. Today is set aside to honor you, and that is exactly what I choose to do.

Not in a distant, ceremonial way, but in the deeply human way that memory works. For your families, you are remembered through stories, through photographs, through the ache that never fully leaves.

For the rest of us, all we can do is say thank you — to salute you, to honor your service, and to wear our patriotism with humility and pride.

You were someone’s child. Someone’s partner. Someone’s mother or father. Someone’s best friend. Someone’s whole world.

And though your life ended in service, your love did not. It continues — carried in the hands of those who miss you, in the generations who grew up hearing your name, in the freedoms we move through without always understanding their cost.

Today, I pause to honor that cost.

As a nation, we honor the birthdays you didn’t get to celebrate. The tables where your chair sits empty. The futures you laid down so others could have one.

And we honor the families who carry your absence with courage and tenderness. Their sacrifice is woven into this day too. They served in their own way — giving up the life they imagined with you so that freedom could ring for others.

If remembrance is a kind of love, then today is a love letter written across an entire nation — one that says: You mattered. You still matter. We have not forgotten.

May your memory be a blessing. May your legacy be held with gratitude. And may those who loved you feel a little less alone today.

Thank you again for your service. I salute you.

Reflection

As we honor those who never came home, consider this: What freedoms, opportunities, or simple moments in your life feel more meaningful when you remember the cost behind them?

With reverence,
Dawna‑Rae
